Postgraduate and ECR Workshop: Leadership and Management in Research on Asia and the Pacific

NSW, Australia - The workshop will give participants the opportunity to discuss their ideas and receive feedback from leading experts in the field, as well as to develop and enhance research networks.

The aims of the workshop are to provide participants with skills and strategies in:
• Identifying new and emerging research problems
• Developing collaborative research programs that cross disciplines, faculties or universities
• Building research cooperation between universities and industry
• Applying for competitive grants and understanding their appropriate administration through to completion of the grant
• Conference and workshop management
Finally, the workshop will give Australian postgraduate students and ECRs working on Asia/Pacific studies the opportunity to discuss their ideas and receive feedback from leading experts in the field, as well as to develop and enhance research networks
The workshop aims for maximum participant interaction and audience input. Experts will canvass significant ideas and strategies and these will be discussed in small, breakout groups. Feedback and critical discussion of ideas will be encouraged.

Prof Mandy Thomas
PVC – Research, ANU; former Executive Director, Australian Research Council, Humanities & Creative Arts.
Prof Stuart Cunningham
Director, ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation, Queensland University of Technology and President of CHASS – Council for Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
Workshop sessions will be facilitated by leading experts in research management and training, career planning, and in Asia Pacific studies.
Who can apply to participate?
PhD students enrolled in any faculty at an Australian university and early career researchers (ECRs) with less than 5 years since the award of their PhD, whose current research examines an issue related to the Asia-Pacific, including the Asia-Pacific diaspora in Australia, and comparative Asia-Pacific and Australia projects. Doctoral candidates should be in their final year of study.
What is involved in participating in the Workshop?
Successful applicants will come to Wollongong from the 17 – 18 July 2007.
The workshop will enable small group discussion and focus on issues relating to the major themes mentioned above. Individual participation will be encouraged.
