Emerging Infectious Diseases: From Basic Sciences to Control

Bangkok, Thailand - Avian influenza and other emerging infectious diseases are of global public health concerns. This workshop will provide a platform for scientists in Thailand and the UK to discuss current issues and establish future research collaborations.

UK-THAI PARTNERS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Chulalongkorn University has been internationally recognised as one of the leading institutes in biomedical research. The University houses more than 1,000 researchers working in a wide extent of biomedical sciences, ranging from basic to applied sciences. The outcomes of these research works have a considerable impact on our understanding and treatment of many diseases, including HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, rabies and more recently avian influenza. Avian influenza is perhaps the most urgent health problem. Approximately 62 million people are estimated to be killed by influenza pandemic; 95% of mortality cases would occur in the developing countries. It is widely accepted that the next pandemic influenza is likely to start in the southern part of China or Southeast Asia.

Thailand is one of the countries tremendously affected by a recent avian influenza epidemic, but managed to limit the infection rather effectively when compared to the neighbouring countries. A research into biology, epidemiology and control of avian influenza in Thailand would provide essential information for preparedness of pandemic influenza. The workshop proposed here would offer a remarkable opportunity for Thai and UK scientists to meet and discuss the feasibility of future research collaborations on avian influenza and other emerging infectious diseases.
