SHARING A FUTURE IN ASIA by The International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS)

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - This event provides a timely opportunity to look at Asia, often proclaimed as the fastest growing region in the world.

Asia is often proclaimed as the fastest growing region in the world today. This is in spite of the fact that nearly a billion of its population is still living in poverty. It is Asia's resilience in the face of extreme adversities and its ability to rise above and overcome the challenge of dividedness and differences that has enhanced the global perception that it is a region of hope and prosperity for everyone, both from inside and outside Asia, to participate and share. Thus ICAS 5 Kuala Lumpur provides a timely opportunity to examine and elaborate critically this possibility.

The International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) is listed among the largest gatherings of research scholars from Centres on Asia and Asians studies, especially in the humanities and social science fields.

Recent developments in Asian studies indicate an emerging trend in cross-disciplinary and inter-regional approach in Asian studies. This positive development among the scholars of Asian studies will be further enhanced through a dynamic and interactive platform at ICAS 5 in Kuala Lumpur.

The first ICAS was held in Leiden in 1998. ICAS 2 (Berlin, 2001), ICAS 3 (Singapore, 2003) and ICAS 4 (Shanghai 2005) followed as ICAS’ role in developing Asian Studies became progressively prominent.

ICAS 5 seeks to continue this tradition with “Sharing a Future in Asia” as its theme. Expecting the participation of over 2,000 delegates representing 60 countries, ICAS 5 will be held from 2nd. to 5th. August 2007 in the heart of Asia, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia.

Jointly hosted and organised by the Institute of Occidental Studies (IKON) and the Institute of the Malay World and Civilization (ATMA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) University of Leiden, the Netherlands, ICAS 5 invites the participation of scholars in any Asia-related field of research.
