INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BIOINFORMATICS

Hong Kong - The focus is on excellence in key areas of bioinformatics and computational biology.

Last year in InCoB2006, New Delhi, India, we saw for the first time the overall participation of the International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCoB) exceed the 800 person mark. InCoB2006, the fifth in a series of conferences which took us from Bangkok, Thailand (2002), Penang, Malaysia (2003), Auckland, New Zealand (2004) to Busan, Korea (2005), marked the first time the best conference papers were selected for publication in a top tier international peer-reviewed journal, BMC Bioinformatics (Impact Factor 4.96). It also marked the first time a full federal government minister graced the opening ceremony of InCoB together with the President of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) underscoring the importance of the InCoB conference to the region and internationally.

This year, in InCoB2007, we are attempting to hold a much smaller but distributed InCoB. We will focus on excellence in key areas of bioinformatics and computational biology, and yet maintain our traditional emphasis on outreach and training.

The main conference will be held in the breathtakingly scenic campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), a top research university in Asia from 27th to 30th August 2007. This will be the main flagbearer for our focus on excellence.

The pre-conference training workshop will be held from 20th to 31st August 2007 at the Vietnam National University (VNU), coordinated by the Institute of Biotechnology, Hanoi, Vietnam, under the sponsorship of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) and the Federation of the Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB). To facilitate outreach, we will endeavour to broadcast the key conference sessions to Hanoi via a high speed TEIN2 internet link between HongKong and Hanoi so that more local participants in Vietnam can participate in InCoB, facilitated by our Internet partners from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).

The post-conference training workshop will be held from 30th to 31st August 2007 in the Nansha IT Park of the HKUST at the Pearl River Delta on mainland People's Republic of China.

In conjunction with our publication partners, top conference full papers in InCoB 2007 will again be published in BMC Bioinformatics; in addition, the rest will be considered for publication in Biomolecular Frontiers.

Key visionaries, luminaries, thought leaders, scientists and students in bioinformatics, computational biology and allied fields are warmly invited to participate in main InCoB 2007 event at HKUST, Hong Kong. ASEAN participants from IndoChina are warmly encouraged to travel to Vietnam for the training-cum-satellite conference venue. After the main conference event in Hong Kong, tutorials and traiing will be held in the beautiful and modern Nansha IT Park at the Pearl River Delta.
