Workshop on “The Role of Media in Building Racial and Religious Harmony”

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - The purpose of the workshop is to assist journalists and journalism students in understanding the role and function of the media in building racial and religious harmony. At the same time, they will be equipped with skills relevant to reporting racial and religious issues.

Strategic Information Research & Development Centre (SIRD) will be organising a a workshop on the investigative journalism in Malaysia titled, “The Role of Media in Religious and Racial Harmonious Building” on 11 August 2007 (Saturday).

In recent years, the state of national unity has been fraying at the edges. Racial and religious divides have deepened. Racial and religious issues appear to have the potential to stir up communal tensions. Such fragility in our unity should not be happening after 50 years of independence.

The purpose of the workshop is to assist journalists and journalism students in understanding the role and function of the media in building racial and religious harmony. At the same time, they will be equipped with skills relevant to reporting racial and religious issues. Finally, the workshop hopes to forge partnerships capable of fully engaging in the inter-religious and inter-ethnic exchanges following every media report.

Prominent trainer Janet Steele, an Associate Professor of Journalism at the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University will moderate the training workshop.

The local panelists are Dr. Mustafa K. Anuar from University Sains Malaysia (USM), Datuk Azman Ujang from BERNAMA, Mr. Baradan Kuppusamy, freelance journalist, and Mr. Bob Teoh from Sin Chew i-Com.
