APEC high level policy dialogue workshop on public perception of agricultural biotechnology

Lima, Peru - The workshop will be a two-day, hands-on session designed to provide information on the current state of public perception of agricultural biotechnology in APEC member economies.

INTRODUCTION AND SCOPE

The workshop will be a two-day, hands-on session designed to provide information on the current state of public perception of agricultural biotechnology in APEC member economies; methodologies for effectively measuring public perception; and various tools and techniques for engaging and influencing the public. The session will also address emerging applications of agricultural biotechnology that may impact public perception in the future. Throughout the workshop, the participants, aided by a facilitator, will attempt to refine the content into a series of “best practices.”

OBJECTIVES

The Public Perception Workshop aims to:

• promote information exchange and sharing of experiences regarding public perception and understanding of agricultural biotechnology, especially in view of the implications on its greater acceptance;

• identify effective tools and techniques to promote greater public awareness and understanding of the actual benefits and risks associated with the application of biotechnology in agriculture;

• discuss transparent approaches to public policy development including interactions with stakeholders and encouraging effective communications approaches to enhance public awareness and understanding of agricultural biotechnology; and

• build policy capacity for the safe introduction and use of agricultural biotechnology products.

DELEGATES

Delegates will be individuals involved in developing, implementing and communicating policy related to biotechnology within their Member Economies. Delegates will be selected by APEC representatives within each Member Economy and will be expected to share knowledge/experiences from their Member Economy.

OTHER ATTENDEES

Other additional delegates, identified by their Member Economy, are welcome to attend. The Workshop is expected to attract delegates who are involved in communications and public involvement activities, those performing risk assessments and those regulating the import and export of biotechnology-derived commodities within their respective Member Economies.

FORMAT

The Workshop will begin with presentations on the current state of public perception of agricultural biotechnology in selected Member Economies, followed by presentations on appropriate methodologies for gauging public perception. Next will be illustrations of innovative methods and models of engaging the public. The delegates will then be exposed to various fundamental tools and techniques (e.g. risk communication, media relations, new media) to effectively communicate with the public. To put these practices in context, delegates will be presented with some successful case studies. The second day of the Workshop will focus on the future, including a discussion of issues and applications that may influence public perception in the coming years. Following each presentation, there will be an opportunity for delegates to ask questions and share their experiences and expertise. Throughout the Workshop, a facilitator will work with delegates to create a “best practices” guide that will serve as the major output of the Workshop.

REGISTRATION

Delegates, expert speakers, observers, and any other participants are required before September 18, 2007 .
