Dismantling the ivory tower

The image of professors and students sitting in their ivory towers and being detached from the “real” world is one that many universities are trying to change. It is no longer enough for higher education institutions to contribute to society through detached teaching and research. In fact, it is important for those privileged to be studying and working in these institutions to become directly engaged with civil society.

This is also the theme of the UNESCO-APEID International Conference, Reinventing Higher Education: Toward Participatory and Sustainable Development, to be held from 12 to 14 December 2007, in Bangkok, Thailand. This conference will provide a unique forum for participants to explore the role and involvement of universities and higher education institutions within the framework of participatory development.
