International Symposium on Skill Science 2007 (ISSS'07)

Skill Science is a new multidisciplinary research area with approaches including artificial intelligence, cognitive science, sports science, bio-mechanism, ecological psychology and so on. In the future, it is expected to bring insight into researches on robotics, aiming to bring human-like flexible and skillful movement into realization.

Skill Science is a new multidisciplinary research area with approaches including artificial intelligence, cognitive science, sports science, bio-mechanism, ecological psychology and so on. Skills in music playing or singing, playing sports, dancing, controlling complex equipment, conducting medical surgery and etc. have been regarded as tacit embodied expertise.

The aim of Skill Science is to bring skills of these sorts onto the podium of scientific exploration, and thereby deepen understanding of the processes of skill acquisition and explore ways of designing good pedagogical environment. The kinds of skills we target at include not just ones for achieving specific tasks in a closed and stable world but also ones for adjusting to dynamically changing environment.

To achieve this goal, we need to conduct various researches, such as examining brain-nerve system and musculoskeletal system for motion, building biomechanical models for movements, employing data mining method to extract skills in experts performance, establishing evaluation criteria for measuring the quality of performance, building cognitive models for skill acquisition, developing cognitive-science-based educational methodologies and so on. In future, Skill Science is expected to bring insight into researches on robotics, aiming to bring human-like flexible and skillful movement into realization.
