Equitable Access: Research challenges for health in developing countries

The Forum meeting of the Global Forum for Health Research has become established as a premier annual event that brings together policy-makers, development partners and the directors and users of research, to debate critical gaps and to mobilize campaigns that address the health needs of the poor and marginalized. We are pleased to announce that, at the invitation of the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China, Forum 11 will take place in Beijing from 29 October to 2 November 2007.

Who will take part?

The Global Forum’s annual meeting provides the opportunity for presentations and exchange of views on key issues on the global health agenda. It brings together several hundred policy-makers, researchers and research leaders, and representatives of development agencies, research institutions and the private sector to address the gaps in health research.

Participants from a broad range of constituencies are expected to be present: health and development ministries, multilateral and bilateral agencies, research-oriented bodies and universities, NGOs and civil society, the private sector, the media.

English is the working language of the meeting.

Programme

The programme (see the overview) provides opportunities for both formal presentations and constructive debate. Time is set aside for networking and personal meetings.

Sessions are expected to take a research-centred perspective on the topics being discussed, focusing not on situational analysis or re-statement of problems but on identifying solutions -- which may be related to new policy recommendations and/or the identification of specific research gaps and new research agendas.

Several critical cross-cutting issues will be mainstreamed throughout all sessions as well as receiving special focus as the central element of particular contributions or strands. These include human rights, equity issues (including gender), poverty issues, health systems research, innovation.

Themes will include:

improving understanding of and equitable access to basic preconditions for health through research (access to health)
innovation
research resources: human, institutional, financial, informational
research aspects of equitable access to decision-making and governance
communication
Programme features include:

• full plenary sessions

• double plenaries

• parallel sessions including panel discussions, roundtables, workshops

• special interest group meetings

• daily poster sessions

• the Marketplace - with stalls where institutions will showcase their work, share results of recent research, display publications, exchange ideas and make or renew contacts.

The programme is set up to allow time for discussion and interaction: breaks and free time over lunch will be focused around the Marketplace to stimulate maximum contact.
