The herbal industry is receiving a renewed interest not only locally but also at the global scene. A number of products from medicinal plants have emerged successful in recent years to highlight the importance of medicinal plants to the development of modern medicine. Malaysia, as a country blessed with rich biodiversity has the competitive edge in this area over many countries provided we have strong research work in prioritized area to transform our herbal industry in into a world class industry.

Prof. Choudhary will present on the recent developments in the biotechnology and chemistry of the medicinal plants along with the presentation of some of the results of research work carried out at Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research, University of Karachi, Pakistan. This includes the centre’s efforts to use medicinal plant cell suspension cultures for the structural transformations of chemical compounds, development of rapid dereplication techniques for medicinal plant chemistry, etc. The seminar will also reveal the revival of medicinal plant products globally and its potential in drug development.
