Inaugural International Conference on the Teaching and Learning of English: Towards an Asian Perspective

The advent of globalization, has intensified the search for effective strategies in the teaching and learning of the English language, especially in Asia where the gap between demanded competence and actual competence in the use of English is widening.

The English language, which has for long been the lingua franca of international business, has redoubled its prominence and relevance to become the de facto world language since the advent of globalization. This has intensified the search for effective strategies in the teaching and learning of the English language, especially in Asia where the gap between demanded competence and actual competence in the use of English is widening. The English language, though widely used in Asia, is not the native language of most, if not all the countries in the region. Nevertheless, the various teaching and learning approaches used in Asia are primarily western based. The travails of the marriage between the Asian cultural contexts and western methods are legion in the annals of ELT in Asia. Although much research on the teaching and learning of English has been conducted in the Asian context, we have yet to have a clearly defined Asian perspective on ELT.

The Faculty of Communication and Modern Languages, Universiti Utara Malaysia is hosting the inaugural international conference on English Language Teaching from 14 to16 November 2005 at the City Bayview Hotel, Penang, Malaysia to provide a forum for scholars and educators from over 25 countries around the world to exchange views and experiences, formulate strategies, forge academic fraternities, and, all in all, contribute positively towards the development of an Asian perspective.

The organizers invite those interested to participate in this conference.
