Lecture Summary:“Dealing with Postsocialist Economies in a Globalizing World – Lessons from the Experience of former East Germany”

Postsocialist economies in Asia as well as in Europe pose many problems for economic policy makers and the international community since the fall of the Iron Curtain. These problems are frequently complicated by the impact of rapid globalization. This lecture will provide a broad review of the experience of dealing with postsocialist economies that has been accumulated at the Halle Institute for Economic Research. As one of Germany’s six national institutes in the field of economic research and lead by Professor Blum, the Halle Institute focuses its activities on research and policy consulting for postsocialist economies in Eastern Europe and former East Germany. Based on the most current data collected by the Halle Institute, Professor Blum will analyze in particular the economic development in East Germany since the fall of the Berlin Wall, its current problems and the lessons to be learned from this for other postsocialist settings.

Professor Ulrich Blum was a Visiting Professor at Montreal University, held a full professorship at Bamberg University and served as founding dean of the economics faculty of Dresden University before becoming President of the Halle Institute for Economic Research.
