International Symposium in Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, Malaysia 2008

Serdang, Malaysia - This is an international symposium to provide higher education and training to neurosurgeons, neurosurgical trainees, nurses and paramedical personnel in the Southeast Asian region.

This international symposium will be held at the Medical Faculty, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.

Endoscopic skull base surgery is an exciting field of neurosurgery that offers a minimally invasive technique to deal with base of skull tumours, cerebral aneurysms and cervicomedullary junction lesions. Today, this technique is gaining in popularity and neurosurgeons worldwide are increasingly opting to utilise the endoscopic approach as more studies and literature reviews continue to favour it in various neurosurgical diseases.

Understanding the anatomy of the area concerned combined with adequate training in neuroendoscopy are among the important fundamentals required to master this field of neurosurgery. Universiti Putra Malaysia medical faculty has always emphasised on teaching and learning and academic excellence. Following these principles, UPM medical faculty, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is organising this international symposium in order to provide higher education and training to neurosurgeons, neurosurgical trainees, nurses and paramedical personnel in the Southeast Asian region.

UPM Anatomy department plays a pivotal role in providing the cadavers, the venue and the necessary manpower for the lectures and the cadaveric workshop included in this symposium. Several internationally recognised professors from Malaysia, Europe, United States of America and India will be attending and share their expertise during this symposium.

There will be a series of lectures, practical demonstrations on endoscopic instruments, hands-on Cadaveric Workshop and live demonstration surgery involving various procedures with special highlights on endoscopic transsphenoidal and transcranial (supraorbital) minimal invasive approaches to the skull base. A special session for nurses and paramedics will be also included.
