The UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum will hold a forum on the theme "Are satirical cartoons still relevant today?" on 07 August 2008, Thursday, 2:30 – 4:30 PM at the Lobby of the museum. The forum is organized in line with the Muling Ptyk: Da Art of Nonoy Marcelo exhibit at the Edge Gallery.
Editorial cartoons and comic strips are powerful communication tools especially in print media, and nowadays even in the Internet. Mostly satirical and humorous, these contain political and social messages, often critical of current events and public figures. Nonoy Marcelo produced iconic characters in his comic strips, such as Ikabod and Bos Myawok, as witty caricatures of Philippine politics and society. With the ongoing economic and social crises, how relevant or effective are they today?
Invited panelists will address this question from the perspectives of the academe, the print media, and the visual arts. The members of the panel include Dr. Helen Yu-Rivera from the Department of Art Studies, Leonilo Doloricon, former Dean of the UP College of Fine Arts, Caesarson Bismonte of The Daily Tribune, Gilbert Daroy of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Jose Tence Ruiz, one of the notable social realists. Virgillio "Pandy" Aviado, guest curator of the exhibit Muling Ptyk, will sit as the moderator.
