As one of the participating museums in the Fernando Amorsolo Seven-museum exhibition, the UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center opens Capturing Anxieties: Amorsolo, His Contemporaries and Pictures of the War on 23 September 2008 (Tuesday), 6:00 PM.

The exhibition features the works of Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto and his contemporaries from the UP Vargas Museum collection spanning the period during the Second World War (1941-1945) until the immediate postwar years (1946-1947). Amorsolo’s contemporaries include Vicente Rivera y Mir, Ireneo Miranda, Dominador Castaneda, Jorge Pineda and Jose Pereira.

Paintings will be complimented by photographs and other archival materials culled from numerous scrapbooks and library materials compiled during Vargas’ term as Executive Secretary to President Quezon and as Chair of the Phil. Executive Commission and, later, as Ambassador to Japan during the war years.

Following the demands of colonial rule, Amorsolo and his contemporaries painted themes in line with Japanese cultural policy of co-prosperity sphere. These highlighted on positive values and Filipino identity but hid the true conditions of the war. The exhibition invites viewers to re-enter this period in our history and to understand the context in which artists like Amorsolo and public officials like Vargas managed to balance colonial imposition and personal anxieties.

Exhibition runs until 19 December 2008.
