EU – South East Asia Expert Meeting on Vector Borne Diseases: Identifying opportunities for Collaboration

Scientific experts meeting focusing on scientific matchmaking and identifying opportunities for collaboration and to form consortia to bid into upcoming FP7 calls

We are pleased to announce the EU – South East Asia Expert Meeting on Vector Borne Diseases will be held in
Singapore on 27 and 28 July 2009
The primary objective of the workshop is to bring together scientific experts to identify opportunities for
collaboration and form consortia to bid into the upcoming EU FP7 calls on vector borne diseases.
The workshop will take an integrated approach to research and will focus on a spectrum of vector borne diseases,
including Dengue, Malaria, Chikungunya and Encephalitis, as well as other relevant newly emerging infections. It
will develop a co-ordinated and joint approach between researchers specialising in different disciplines including
virology, transmission, epidemiology, diagnostic approaches and/or treatment and prevention strategies, including
public health-relevant questions, as well as infections’ natural cycles, including basic biology of vectors and
diseases reservoirs and how to control them. This will ultimately contribute to a comprehensive approach to
counter the threats from these infections.
Speakers from the EU and ASEAN+3 nations are invited to give their respective regional inputs and update
researchers on the latest activities within the two regions. The participants will then break out into focus groups to
discuss the opportunities for collaboration and form concrete proposals to bid into the upcoming FP7 calls.
Significant synergy is expected from uniting EU and ASEAN+3 researchers from different fields around the
common goal of generating new knowledge on these diseases, and delivering improved ways to monitor its
spread, diagnose, prevent, control and treat it.
The knowledge generated from collaborations between researchers in the EU and ASEAN+3SEA is expected to
help predict the emergence and spread of new vector borne diseases and assess the efficacy of different
interventions and develop new interventions to interrupt or limit the spread of these diseases with the goal of
protecting against these threats.
The expected outcomes of the workshop are:
⇒ Scientific matchmaking to form concrete proposals in response to upcoming FP7 calls (within the health work
programme).
⇒ 2.3.3 - Potentially new and re-emerging epidemics
⇒ 2.3.4 – Neglected infectious diseases
⇒ Take stock of existing and planned research projects and identify any issues that could be the subject of
future collaborations.
⇒ Identify the specific needs of each region and initiate actions to address these.
The workshop is sponsored by SEA-EU-NET and the British High Commission in Singapore, and supported by the
Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN), Agency for Science and Technology (Singapore).
