The UP Vargas Museum will hold an artists’ talk by Melvin Calingo (Pasig, Destiny’s Hand), Joanah Tinio-Calingo (Cresci Prophecies), Michael David (Kubori Kikiam), Gilbert Monsanto (Darna, Bayan Knights) and Jon Zamar (Digmaang Salinlahi), members of the group Panel Collective. This is in line with the exhibit of the same title, Panel Collective, at the Edge Gallery. The talk is scheduled on 26 June 2009 (Friday), 1:00 PM, at the Lobby of the Museum.

Calingo, David and Zamar worked for the Culture Crash Comics (CCCom), a bi-monthly comic anthology that featured anime-style stories and characters until the release of its last issue in 2004. Currently, Calingo draws Destiny’s Hand for the Seven Seas Entertainment, an American Manga Publisher. Meanwhile, Zamar, David and Tinio-Calingo continued the operation of their independent Point Zero Comics that publishes their titles Kubori Kikiam, Cresci Prophecies and Digmaang Salinlahi. Monsanto has worked in comics professionally for almost 20 years now, from Biotrog, to Exodus, to the revival of Darna, and now Bayan Knights under Sacred Mountain Publications.

In their previous talk held last summer term, the group gave an overview on the comic book industry in the Philippines, and shared experiences in creating comics both locally and internationally. They will again share their insights and embark on the basics of creating comics. The group will give a lecture-demonstration on materials, tools and computer programs used in comic illustration and the fundamentals of drawing using digital technology.
