GSK Symposium on Neurodegeneration and the Neurobiology of Cognition

GlaxoSmithKline's Centre for Research in Cognitive and Neurodegenerative Disorders, Singapore is organizing an international symposium on the neural basis of cognition, and the risks of neurodegenerative diseases to cognitive processes.

Considerable progress has been made in identifying the basic mechanisms of learning and memory, using genetic and pharmacological approaches. At the same time, increasing our understanding of the role of inflammation and stroke and chronic stress in damaging cognition is vital to developing strategies for treating acute and neurodegenerative brain injury, and for restoring normal function.

Many insights will be gained by discovering more about the mechanisms of normal brain development, since abnormal development can lead to a range of cognitive disorders from mental retardation and learning disabilities to schizophrenia.

Finally, it is the responsibility of the pharmaceutical industry, in collaboration with academic and clinical researchers, to translate this new knowledge into safe and effective treatments for the daunting range of cognitive disorders.

This meeting, which will provide a platform for researchers from across Singapore to interact with international leaders in this field, has been made possible by generous sponsorship from The British High Commission and with the assistance of A*STAR.

The details of the meeting are as follows:

Date : 10th to 11th March 2006 (Friday to Saturday)
Time : 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (Friday); 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (Saturday)
Venue : Aspiration (Level 2M), Matrix Building @ Biopolis
