“The Quran and Sunnah: Methodologies of Interpretation”

This conference on the Methodologies of Tafsir and Sharh Hadith will highlight the efforts of Muslim scholars and identify the excellent methodology, which may be in conformity with the contemporary needs, thus protecting Muslims from confusion while interacting with tafsir and sharh Hadith works.

The Holy Quran and the Sacred Hadith constitute two basic sources of Islamic law and knowledge. Muslim scholars paid special attention, throughout almost all the stages of the Islamic history, to the study and interpretation of commands and rules available in these two sources, producing a number of highly significant Tafsir and Sharh Hadith works. It is not hidden from the knowledgeable how valuable tafsir books and Hadith commentaries are in developing such a flawless understanding of the Quranic ayah and Prophetic ahadith as conforms to Arabic grammar rules and shariah principles. These works that are available in plenty represent different approaches and various methodologies.

Keeping in view the varieties of approaches and methodologies in tafsir and sharh Hadith and their viability in the modern age, the Department of Quran and Sunnah Studies of Kulliyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia proposed to organize an International Conference on the Methodologies of Tafsir and Sharh Hadith so as to highlight the efforts of Muslim scholars in the said two fields, and identify the excellent methodology, which may be in conformity with the contemporary needs, thus protecting Muslims from confusion while interacting with tafsir and sharh Hadith works.

Objectives

1) To highlight Muslim scholars’ (mufassirin and muhaddithin) contribution towards the dissemination of the Messages of the Quran and Sunnah.
2) To identify the strengths and limitations of various methodologies of the interpretation of the Quran and Sunnah.
3) To compare classical and modern trends in tafsir and the interpretation of ahadith.
4) To develop viable methodologies of tafsir and interpretation of Sunnah, in light of the contemporary needs and challenges.

1) Methodologies of tafsir and interpretation of Sunnah as applied by scholars.
2) Scholars’ contributions towards codification of tafsir methodologies and Hadith interpretation.
3) Criticism and evaluation of tafsir and sharh Hadith methodologies.
4) Contemporary methodologies of tafsir and Hadith interpretation.
