Introduction

The Teaching and the Learning of English has never been more demanding. Countries that have long neglected or sidelined the language are giving it new impetus, particularly to its relevance and in the process fresh resources are being channeled towards its prominence and outlook.

English not being a native of Asia and many regions of the world cannot be denied. However, its recent gains and foothold have to be reckoned with, with multitudes of students willing to part with large amounts of money to gain whatever benefits the language can offer, now or in the future. Though an offshoot of the west, it is now no more its domain. In fact no one can claim dominance of the ‘tentacles’ of the language that is spreading far and near affecting world leaders and ordinary people alike. Knowing the language is a ‘passport’ by itself to major ports of the world.

Once the confines of business per se it has pervaded into all aspects of the commercial life, touching everyone in its spread. With such a move, we need to have a fresh look at our approaches, to be better prepared for this pervasive move. The first conference was a resounding success in arresting some of the rut that had existed in the teaching and the learning of English especially in Asia. We made some innovative discoveries, renewed existing modes and most of all strengthened the existing fraternity. Everyone went away happy, promising to come again with better ideas, having put the ones learned at the last conference to work.

With the onslaught of ICT, Globalization and Multiculturalism new lifelines have to be explored. This conference is here to provide such an avenue - to provide a forum for scholars and educators to continue to exchange views and experiences, formulate strategies, forge academic fraternities, and, all in all, contribute positively towards the continued development of an Asian perspective.

As such it has been aptly themed The 2nd Biennial International Conference on the Teaching and The Learning of English: Exploring New Frontiers, the aim among others being to sustain the grip and popularity that English is currently enjoying.
