As part of the continuing celebration of the University of the Philippines' Centenary, the UP Vargas Museum hosts Paz Tanjuaquio's artist talk and free dance workshop on 18 February 2008. Tanjuaquio is a choreographer who is co-founder and artistic director of TOPAZ ARTS, Inc., a contemporary dance company based in the United States and established in 2000 with composer Todd Richmond. With a BA in Visual Arts from the University of California and an MFA in Dance from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Tanjuaquio integrates choreography and visual art with Richmond's original music and film. The result is a seamless collaboration of movement, music and images that is "intelligently conceived, image-filled" according to the New York Times.

For the Artist Talk "Dance and Film," Tanjuaquio will present TOPAZ ARTS' recent work on film and introduce their approach in making dance for the camera. She will also teach a movement workshop based on her New York training in modern dance and improvisation. The focus of the workshop is to find connections between the body and the mind, between the performer and the audience. The workshop starts with an "anatomical meditation," bringing awareness to the body's condition through imagery and breath. Continuing with a floor warm-up that incorporates simple stretches, the class moves into techniques in modern dance combined with basic ballet principles. Phrases are taught and improvised, bringing a keen awareness to intuitive versus deliberate movement. Focus on alignment and kinesthetics with concepts of clarity and intensity are explored as keys to a powerful performer.
