Translational Psychiatry bridges this gap by focusing on papers that directly study psychiatric disorders and bring new discovery into clinical practice. In addition to this core mission of the journal, we may consider papers from all areas of medical research, including — but not restricted to — molecular biology, genetics, pharmacology, imaging, and epidemiology, that have potential to contribute to enhance the field of translational psychiatry more broadly.

Researchers at Kanazawa University have identified a previously unrecognized mechanism by which structural changes in the cerebellum influence social behavior. The study demonstrates that disruption of specialized extracellular structures surrounding cerebellar neurons alters neuronal activity across brain circuits involved in social behavior. The findings provide new insight into the neural mechanisms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Among anesthetics, ketamine has a unique effect: it also acts as an antidepressant. A research team led by Osaka Metropolitan University Professor Makoto Kondo linked ketamine to brain regulation of IGF-1, which works independently of other ketamine-associated factors. The discovery may help untangle ketamine’s positive and negative effects, allowing future drug development to target IGF-1 directly.
