Summary
This talk for The Newcastle University in Singapore Summer Camp 2026 undergraduates provided an Overview of Singapore’s commitment and challenges to achieving Net-Zero Carbon Emissions, the causes and effects of Global Warming and Environmental Sustainability. It was followed by a discussion on the Singapore Green Mark Building Certification, Sustainable building supply chains, transition from Linear to Circular Economy, Design for Disassembly in the context of the Built Environment, a review of the Built Environment Decarbonisation Technology Roadmap and finally an insight into the Challenges and Opportunities for the Future of Work in a Sustainable Built Environment.
Speaker Information:
Dr Khong has more than 30 years’ experience in Manufacturing Operations and R&D in the Aerospace, Hard Disk Drive and Building Products industries and held senior management positions in Rolls-Royce Singapore, Maxtor Peripherals and Diethelm Industries Singapore. He was also Technical Consultant to two local SMEs. He was Adjunct Professor at the National University of Singapore as well as at the Nanyang Technological University. Since 2024, he has delivered lectures to Newcastle University UK in Singapore, his most recent lecture was on Design for Disassembly and Sustainability. Dr Khong graduated from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, UK in Mechanical Engineering and holds a PhD in Machine Tool Controls also from the same university. Dr Khong is a registered Professional Engineer, Singapore, a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK and a Chartered Engineer, UK.
