DGIST Professor Hongsoo Choi Selected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), One of the World’s Most Renowned Academic Societies

□ Professor Hongsoo Choi from the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science & Technology (DGIST; President Kunwoo Lee), has been selected as a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), one of the world’s most renowned academic societies. From January 2025 onward, Professor Choi will officially serve as a fellow of the IEEE.

□ The IEEE is one of the world’s most renowned academic societies in the discipline of electrical engineering, electronics, computers, and communications, with nearly 460,000 members from more than 190 countries worldwide. A fellowship is a prestigious position granted through a strict annual review, only to researchers who have at least 10 years of experience in electrical engineering, electronics, communications, and semiconductors and have made remarkable contributions to advances in technology. Only the top 0.1% of all members are selected as fellows.

□ Professor Choi was named a fellow of the IEEE’s Robotics and Automation Society for his contributions to the development and implementation of medical microrobots and nanorobots, the commercialization of applicable technologies, and the publication of excellent academic papers.

□ Professor Choi said, “I am very honored to be named a fellow of the IEEE, and I believe it is the outcome of joint efforts with DGIST and the research team, not an individual achievement. I will remain committed to developing intelligent robotics technologies and nurturing future generations.”

□ Professor Choi, whose work was recently selected as one of the Top 100 Outstanding Achievements in National Research and Development in 2024, will also serve as a full member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology from 2025. DGIST provides complete, multifaceted support by continually expanding its research infrastructure and offering a creative and interdisciplinary research environment for researchers to produce innovative outcomes. Based on these efforts, DGIST takes a step forward to become one of the world’s most prestigious universities through domestic and international collaboration.
