The University’s teaching units are grouped under six faculties and two schools, namely, the Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Communication, Faculty of Construction and Land Use, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Health and Social Science, School of Design, and School of Hotel and Tourism Management. The University has more than 1,000 academic and research staff from different parts of the world, running more than 150 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The University is the sole provider of the following programmes in Hong Kong: design, engineering physics, fashion and textiles, geomatics, international shipping and transport logistics, medical laboratory science, occupational therapy, optometry, physiotherapy and radiography.

Apart from nurturing professional talents for society, PolyU excels in applied research of relevance to both public and private sectors. Among these are, for instance, the world’s first palm-print recognition system, the world’s first “sweating” manikin and world’s first fibre optic sensor system for “Smart Railway” systems. PolyU has also obtained official approval to establish the first and the only State Key Laboratory set up in the Chinese mainland to focus on Chinese medicine, known as the State Key Laboratory for Chinese Medicine and Molecular Pharmacology.

Leveraging its research strengths, PolyU makes significant contributions to the economy with its expanding range of consultancy, professional training and applied research services. Through these activities, the University maintains strong partnership with the business and industrial sectors.
