Background:

Senior Queensland Government Minister, the Honourable Ros Bates, Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training, will lead Queensland’s largest-ever delegation from the International Education and Training, and Research and Innovation sectors to Japan and Taiwan this month. (Media release to come.)

The Minister will also host a dedicated International Education, Research and Innovation event at the Australia Pavilion, Expo 2025 Osaka, on Thursday 17 July, representing Queensland as a Gold Partner of the Australia Pavilion.

Opportunity:

Minister Bates will meet with Professor Masakazu Sugiyama, a key figure in Queensland-Japan collaboration and a designated Queensland Global Connector (Japan).

RCAST, a leading research institute of The University of Tokyo, has established a close working relationship with Queensland through Professor Sugiyama, particularly in energy transition and applied technology.

A site visit will highlight new areas for research collaboration between RCAST and Queensland’s top-tier research institutions.

The visit aligns with The University of Tokyo’s commitment to global collaboration and industry engagement to accelerate impactful, real-world research—a vision shared by Queensland universities.

The University of Tokyo maintains strong relationships with Queensland universities, particularly The University of Queensland (UQ) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT), recognising their expertise in applied research and energy transition.

UQ and the University of Tokyo have maintained a partnership since 1997 and are now expanding collaboration between UQ’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) and RCAST. They signed an MOU in September 2023 to develop international R&D collaboration opportunities including plans for joint research, researcher exchange, and potentially establishing a RCAST satellite office at UQ.
