□ DGIST (President Kunwoo Lee) announced that Professor Victor Ambros, the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, will deliver a lecture at the 27th Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) on Monday, October 10.
□ Prof. Victor Ambros, the lecturer at the 27th DLS, is a world-renowned biologist and holds the title of Silverman Professor[1] of the Natural Sciences Program in Molecular Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in the U.S. He was selected as the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine and is recognized as a pioneer in microRNA (miRNA) research.
□ Prof. Ambros received his B.S. (1975) and Ph.D. (1979) degrees in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has conducted research and taught at Harvard University, Dartmouth Medical School, and now the University of Massachusetts Chan School of Medicine. A recipient of the 2008 Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research and the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, he is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
□ In his lecture, Prof. Ambros will talk about “Genes and Molecular Mechanisms Controlling Animal Development.” He will explain how miRNA, first discovered in C. elegans, regulates gene expression without protein synthesis and plays a critical role in animal growth and tissue maintenance. He will also shed light on the gene regulation mechanism of miRNA through research using experimental models and introduce the process of exploring the principles of animal generation and development.
□ “The DLS Lecture is an important venue for sharing the latest research achievements of world-class scholars and researchers and promoting academic exchange,” said DGIST President Lee Kunwoo. “We hope that this lecture will serve as an opportunity for DGIST researchers and students to explore innovative research directions.” He also mentioned that “in the future, DGIST will continue to hold DLS lectures by inviting top researchers to strengthen DGIST’s convergence research capabilities and nurture global scientific talents.”
□ DGIST has invited Nobel laureates and world-renowned scholars to deliver DLS lectures to share their world-class research achievements and invigorate academic exchanges. This is to foster DGIST’s creative and challenging research culture, strengthen its convergence research capabilities, and contribute to the development of global scientific talents.
