The UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum is bringing back Amorsolo, Osias and the Philippine Readers Series on 15 September 2006 at the Landing Gallery on the third floor.
On view at the Amorsolo, Osias and the Philippine Readers Series exhibition are volumes of what were considered as one of the basic instructional materials during the American period – The Philippine Readers Series by Camilo Osias, with illustrations by the brothers Fernando and Pablo Amorsolo. Drawings from the Museum’s collection by their contemporaries, which have striking similarities to some of the drawings in the series, are also highlighted.
The Philippine Readers Series, published by Ginn and Company in Boston in 1932, was a relevant educational instruction when the Americans sought to influence the Filipinos further through readership. The book includes stories interspersed with local folktales and myths for Filipino elementary school children.
Amorsolo, Osias and the Philippine Readers Series was first exhibited last year, from 15 October to 6 November, along with an exhibition of Japanese Occupation Period propaganda materials, as part of the Vargas Museum’s program to showcase the rich collection of Filipiniana books and materials from its Library and Archives Collection. This time, the exhibition is a timely tribute in preparation for the centenary celebrations of the UP College of Fine Arts in 2007, and the University of the Philippines in 2008. Both of the Amorsolo brothers were educated and later taught at UP.
