National Workshop On Proteomics and Bioinformatics

Kolkata, India - This workshop aims to review the developments and advances in the fields of Proteomics and Bioinformatics and their inter-relationship.

Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteins, particularly their structures and functions. The proteome refers to all the proteins produced by an organism, much like the genome is the entire set of genes. The human body may contain more than 2 million different proteins, each having different functions. Thus, proteomics is the study of the composition, structure, function, and interaction of the proteins directing the activities of each living cell. While the genome is a rather constant entity, the proteome differs from cell to cell and is constantly changing through its biochemical interactions with the genome and the environment. The complexity of proteome arises due to alternative splicing or alternative post-translational modifications and formation of functional complexes between proteins or with RNA molecules.

Bioinformatics employs a wide range of computational techniques including sequence and structure alignment, database and software design, data mining, analysis of structure and fold of macromolecules, phylogentic tree construction, prediction of protein structure and function, gene finding, analysis of expression data, etc. With the flood of data from genome sequences there is a need to develop novel algorithms to predict protein structure (including quaternary state) and function on genomic scale, assign proteins to know pathways and protein-protein interaction networks and to use the information for drug discovery and design.

To review the developments and advances in the fields of Proteomics and Bioinformatics and their inter-relationship, the Bioinformatics Centre, Bose Institute, Kolkata is organizing a two day Workshop on ā€¯Proteomics and Bioinformaticsā€¯. There will be a demonstartion on the indigenously developed software on computional biology, Biosuite by T.C.S.
