Public forum on Malaysian Response to Climate Change

Extensive media coverage on climate change and its devastating impacts in particular has made many Malaysians feel helpless and unsure what to do. The Chevening Alumni is organising this forum to discuss the issue and advise Malaysians on what they can do to reduce their climate impact.

Public forum on Malaysian Response to Climate Change to be held on May 23 at British Council.

Extensive media coverage on climate change and its devastating impacts in particular has made many Malaysians feel helpless and unsure what to do. Given this situation, the Chevening Alumni Comiittee is pleased to assemble a highly-experienced panel to discuss the issue and advise Malaysians on what they can do to reduce their climate impact.

Details of the forum are as follows:

Title: Malaysian Response to Climate Change

Date: Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Venue: British Council, Wisma Selangor Dredging, (Examination Hall, 2nd Floor, South Block), Jalan Ampang. (Short walking distance from KLCC station on Putra LRT line.)

Time: 6.30pm to 8.30pm (Refreshments will be served from 6.30-7pm.)

Admission: Free

Objectives:

1) To raise awareness on climate change and prompt individuals and organisations to take immediate action to minimise their impact on the climate.

2) To commemorate World Environment Day, which will fall on June 5.

Programme:

Welcome Remarks by Mr Mark Pui, President, Chevening Alumni Malaysia.

Science of Climate Change and International Developments by Mr Chow Kok Kee, former Director-General, Meteorological Services Department and Expert, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The Government's Role by Dr Nadzri Yahaya, Deputy Director-General, Department of National Solid Waste Management, Minister of Housing and Local Government.

What the Private Sector Can Do (speaker to be announced)

Civil Society's Expectations by Ir Gurmit Singh, Chairman, Centre for Environment, Technology & Development Malaysia.

Ethics and Climate Change by Mr Nithi Nesadurai, Hon. Secretary, Chevening Alumni Malaysia and Past President, Environmental Protection Society Malaysia.
