Functional Foods Conference 2007

KL, Malaysia - Among the objectives include sharing information on global status and development of functional foods/ functional ingredients with a special focus in the Asian region.

In Asia, as elsewhere in the world, consumers are looking for, purchasing and consuming foods that may provide health benefits beyond just providing basic nourishment. Often referred to as functional foods, these foods contain natural components besides essential nutrients. Functional foods represent a growing market for the food industry and the future growth of this category of foods requires all stakeholders involved – academia, regulators and industry scientists and marketers - to understand the opportunities and challenges facing each of them to ensure that these potential health benefits are maximized. Scientific evidence is required to ascertain the promise of these foods as well as to allow for guidance on the related claims that can be made so that consumers can continue to trust and benefit from these foods.

The future success of functional food will be influenced by discoveries that support the associated benefits, technological breakthroughs in product development, a supportive yet clear regulatory environment based on science, and insight into consumers’ needs, purchasing behaviors and their ever changing needs.

This 2½ days conference will highlight recent advances, emerging trends and discoveries of functional components in foods; identify the newly recognized health benefits of functional foods and ingredients and their scientific substantiation, with particular focus on those unique to Asia; the latest global and regional regulatory developments for health, nutrients or other functional claims relating to these foods; understand consumer’s perspectives with regard to their needs and expectations; and provide examples of industry’s positioning in the market place.
