To commemorate the International Labor Day, the UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum & Filipiniana Research Center will open Tru-Colors: A Visual Experience on Contemporary Philippine Realities at the Edge Gallery on 06 May 2008, 5:00 PM. This exhibit pays tribute to the workers' movement in the Philippines that continue to shape the country's history and its contemporary socio-cultural and political challenges.
It has been the tradition of social realists to mount an exhibit every Labor Day. This year, the exhibit will highlight different shades of colors that characterize class stratification in Philippine society. Led by Prof. Neil Doloricon of the UP College of Fine Arts, the exhibit features various works of noted artists such as Antipas Delotavo, Federico Dominguez, Jose Tence Ruiz, Renato Habulan, Manny Garibay, Pablo Baens Santos, Ed Manalo, Aga Francisco, Carlos "Totong" Francisco Jr., Chitoy Zapata, Arturo Sanches Jr., Michael de Guzman, Iggy Rodriguez, Addrein Silanga, Medeo Cruz, Jason Valenzuela, Le-an Jasul, among others.
Using colors as metaphor—Cory's yellow, Erap's Orange, Hunyango. Sanctimonious White. Darck Evil, Military Camouflage. Militant Red, Tru-Colors seeks to portray the varied hues of current socio-cultural values spawned by the impact of neo-liberal waves upon a receding land of crisis, corruption, and decay—and an embattled people.
TRU-COLORS translates the various layers of colors that evoke harmony and contrast – the primary and the secondary – which are basic contradictions of society. Color characteristics like hot and cool, vibrant and drab, speak of common traits and temperaments among us.
TRU-COLORS suggests the various political stands of major players who continue to dominate the political landscape of our society.
TRU-COLORS will run until 14 June 2008. This exhibit is also made possible by the UP Diliman Office for the Initiatives in Culture and the Arts.
