The 9th Malaysia International Food & Beverage Trade Fair

KL, Malaysia - This event, aims among others to meet national food and export requirements, as well as harness the growth of agricultural biotechnology.

Creating a Vibrant Mix of Opportunities
from a Multi-billion marketplace in MIFB 2008

A. Meeting national food and export requirements

Population and income growth as well as changes in lifestyle resulting from urbanization in Malaysia is bringing about changing tastes, food preferences and an increasingly high food consumption pattern. Coupled with its strong performance in intra-Asean trade and aggressive promotion as an international trading nation, the demand of F & B for consumption and exports is further escalating. Malaysia is stepping up efforts to become net food exporter by 2010.

B. Developing and promoting halal food

The potential market for halal food is estimated to be about USD350 billion to USD410 billion per year based on the world Muslim population of over 1.5 billion. Malaysia’s positioning as the International Halal Food Hub with its strategic route as the premier halal food supply base and global certification center makes it the ideal springboard to the global halal food market.

C. Harnessing the growth of agricultural biotechnology

Malaysia is aggressively developing biotechnological applications to further advance the agricultural industry by generating commercially viable food products and move them up the value chain, opening up huge opportunities for investments and joint ventures among local and foreign biotechnology companies.

D. Modernizing the Agriculture and agro-based sector as a new source of wealth creation

Identified as the country’s third engine of growth, the Government is allocating RM11.4 billion under the 9th Malaysia Plan to the Agriculture sector with focuses on enhancing the value chain, cultivating high value-added agricultural activities and large scale commercial farming utilizing ICT as well as exploiting the full potential of biotechnology.
