1st International Conference on Biotechnology for the Wellness Industry

KL, Malaysia - Wellness Industry Exhibition 2008 is the first wellness showcase of its kind in Malaysia. It showcases the latest developments in the wellness industry and at the same time provide an outstanding opportunity of knowledge-gathering, networking and marketing.

Background

In the 19th and 20th centuries, two health revolutions that influenced mortality rates were the control of infectious disease through health protective measures and the fight against non-communicable disease through behavior modification. The third health revolution begins in 1986 with the introduction of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion during the conference of the World Health Organization, where it is agreed that empowerment of individuals, communities and entire societies is the key factor in promoting health.

Today, human wellness is generally associated with good nutrition, dietary supplements, physical fitness and mental fitness. The wellness concept is centered on the idea that the mind, body, spirit, community and environment are inter-related and inter-dependent. The wellness industry is born based on the notion of pro-active health and homeostasis. People are starting to realize the extent of pro-active control that they can have on their health and well-being. In 2003, the global market for herbals, supplements, functional foods and other natural products is more than US$160 B. The World Bank predicts the market will increase to US$200 B in 2010. It is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and is expected to become the next trillion dollar industry.

The growth in wellness industry has generated demand in related technology. Consolidation of a wide range of scientific fields including biotechnology, life sciences, medical treatment and others can help establish the industry. The application of biotechnology and wellness technology is expected to create added value to the food, healthcare, nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals and industrial bioprocessing sectors.

Theme
Organic Food

Organic food can be fresh or processed food from organically produced crops and organically reared animals. Organic crops are grown without chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers. Organic food must be processed without ionizing radiation or food additives. For animals, to be organic, they must be reared without the use of antibiotics and without the use of growth hormones.
Functional Food

Functional food is any fresh or processed food that has health benefit beyond basic nutrition. Biologically active components in functional food can play a role in promoting good health or reducing the risk of disease. Some examples are products containing probiotics, Omega-3 enriched eggs and margarine with plant sterols.
Nutraceuticals

A neutraceutical can be defined as any substance that may be considered a food or part of a food that provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease. Thus it is common for the term nutraceutical to be used interchangeably with the term functional food. For a more restrictive definition, nutraceuticals have been defined as phytochemicals or animal derived active compounds that are sold in medicinal forms not generally associated with food and have demonstrated physiological benefits. Some examples are lycopene, catechins, genistein, flavonoids and garlic oil.
Fermented Food

Fermented food is any food where the preparation process involved a step where micro-organisms or enzymes alter the properties of the food. The purpose of fermenting the food is to get better taste and texture and to increase shelf life. Some examples are tempeh, kimchi, soy sauce, tapai and miso.
Wellness Technology

As the preventive/wellness model of healthcare grows, the need for technology-based services has also grown. Some examples of the technologies that are related to the wellness industry are healthcare planning, diagnosis and programmes.
Cosmeceuticals

Cosmeceuticals are topical cosmetic-pharmaceuticals hybrids that are applied to enhance beauty. They contain ingredients that can influence biological function. Some examples are skin care products containing herbs and enzymes, and shampoo containing saw palmetto and azelaic acid for hair loss treatments.
Industrial bioprocessing

Industrial bioprocessing is the commercial production of a chemical or bioproduct by a biological process. Some examples are biodiesel production, enzymatic hydrogen production, hyaluronic acid production and microbial polysaccharide production.
Stage Events

Exhibition of wellness related products. Wellness related programmes such as aerobics, pilates, massage and many more.
