On Friday, 19 December, the Keio Leading-edge Laboratory of Science and Technology (KLL; located in Kohoku-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa) will hold the KEIO TECHNO-MALL science and technology exhibition at the Tokyo International Forum (located in Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) to show the achievements of research by Keio University’s Faculty of Science and Technology and the Graduate School of Science and Technology to the public.

This, the ninth such exhibition, will provide a rare opportunity to experience Keio University’s research and technology first-hand in the form of demonstration and presentation of samples. In addition, this year’s exhibition will feature a wide range of concurrent sessions and events, such as a keynote lecture by Yuichiro Anzai, President of Keio University, and seminars and round-table discussions on related technologies with members of the Faculty of Science and Technology.

We look forward to welcoming a great number of educators and students in related fields of research over the course of the exhibition and to provide all visitors with an opportunity to freely witness the cutting edge of technology.

In the midst of the unending air of celebration that surrounds the 150th anniversary commemorative ceremony of Keio University's founding, we are holding the KEIO TECHNO-MALL once again. Especially mindful of the 150 years since the establishment of the University, we organized ninth annual The TECHNO-MALL under the theme "Innovative frontiers dreams". The TECHNO-MALL is held in two halls of Tokyo International Forum, mixing exhibitions and symposiums. To give the message that the Graduate School of Science and Technology nurtures new technologies and embryonic disciplines in a framework of barrier-transcending academic fusion, in 2000 we opened the School of Fundamental Science and Technology, the School of Integrated Design Engineering, and the School of Science for Open and Environmental Systems. About 1800 students, nearly ten percent of whom are exchange students, are active in this new environment centered on the Yagami campus.

The KEIO TECHNO-MALL is an opportunity to present to society the R&D achievements created by the daily activities of the faculty members, young researchers, graduate students and joint external researchers on the Yagami campus, which maintains a harmony between "science-based engineering" and "engineering-based science." Nothing gives me greater pleasure than for society to appraise the diverse achievements of Keio University and create starting points for partnerships for the next breakthrough opportunities. I hope that everyone here will share their unreserved opinions with our staff manning the booths.

Since the Keio Leading-edge Laboratory of Science and Technology was established in December 2000, the KEIO TECHNO-MALL has been held every year at the Tokyo International Forum. This year marks the ninth year of the KEIO TECHNO-MALL. This exhibition was begun so that everyone could have a first-hand look at Keio University's research achievements and create ties between industry and academia. Each booth presents real-life demonstrations and actual creations to the greatest extent possible. This allows you to understand our research achievements even more deeply.

The theme of this year's exhibition, "Innovative frontiers dreams" allows visitors to view the fruits in science and technology nurtured by Keio University - celebrating the 150th anniversary of our founding - while at the same time getting a sense of the University's future hopes.

Also held at the TECHNO-MALL are three newly established Round Table sessions, entitled "Ecological Technology," "Inter-faculty Collaboration with Medical and Science & Technology," and "New Technologies for Fluid Dynamics and Chemical Reactions". Our faculty members, experts in each of these fields, wish to exchange viewpoints with you concerning the present and future states of these fields.

For the close of the exhibition, the president of Keio University is scheduled to give a speech on "Keio Science and Engineering - Past, Present, and Future." Please listen to learn about Keio's advances in science and technology and our vision for the future.

I understand how hectic the year-end period is, and I thank you for your attendance. I hope you will take a close look at our research achievements and find opportunities for partnerships between academia and industry. I hope you will have a pleasant experience. Thank you.
