Official Launch of the 2009 Human Development Report
Overcoming Barriers: Human Mobility and Development
Time : Monday, October 5, 2009, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Place: IDRC, W. David Hopper Room, 150 Kent Street, 8th floor, Ottawa
Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is pleased to host the North American launch of the 2009 Human Development Report, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada).
Since 1990, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has highlighted key development challenges in its flagship annual document. The 2009 Human Development Report focuses on migration, both within and beyond borders. Migration can expand people’s choices – in terms of incomes, access to services, and participation, for example – but underlying inequalities mean that the opportunities available to people vary widely around the world. The report explores how a human development approach can help redress some of the inequities that erode the potential benefits of mobility.
On hand to present the report and answer questions will be David Morrison of UNDP (Executive Secretary, United Nations Capital Development Fund) and Manolo Abella, Senior Research Associate at the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society at the University of Oxford, and former director of the International Labour Organization’s International Migration Programme.
The event is free but seating is limited, so please register.
French and English simultaneous interpretation will be available.
Copies of the Report will be available for purchase on site. Free copies of the Report will only be available for journalists.
