Research Assistant II

Position Summary: Work with the Center for the Study of Los Angeles’ (StudyLA) senior leadership to respond to the needs of Los Angeles by developing, implementing and managing current and new research projects consistent with StudyLA’s mission.

 

 

Requirements: 

Experience/Qualifications:          

Minimum 1-2 years experience in progressively responsible positions. Proven ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative data analyses using various techniques and data sources.

Demonstrated knowledge in theory and methods in political science, urban/intercultural studies, sociology, or related social science field required.

Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries incorporating complex, highly technical information.

Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships between StudyLA and communities inside and outside LMU.

Must possess strong research skills. The candidate must also demonstrate leadership skills to implement StudyLA’s vision for research that leads to action for social justice.

Required Education:      

Typically a Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, urban planning, sociology, or related field is required. Master’s degree is preferred. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.

Physical Demands (if applicable)

Occasional standing, walking, and lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds. Frequent reaching to low levels. Constant sitting, finger movement, feeling with hands, clear speaking, conversational hearing, and seeing near.

Responsibilities: 

Position Specific Responsibilities:             

Help senior leadership manage all phases of current and new research projects (e.g., LA Public Opinion Survey, exit polls, etc.), including their completion and dissemination.

Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of data collected by StudyLA and/or other organizations using StudyLA and university resources.

Help prepare research reports, academic papers, and articles for the popular press.

Expand relationships within the university, the Los Angeles community, other academic communities, and other relevant individuals and organizations to develop and implement research projects, increase awareness about StudyLA research, and increase use of StudyLA data by other professionals and students.

Help represent StudyLA at professional activities and meetings, both inside and outside the university.

Support StudyLA in its mission to assist students, faculty, and the University become agents for social justice.

Hire, train, and supervise work study students.

Perform other duties as assigned.
