Kanazawa University

Established in 1949 but with roots stretching back over a century and a half, Kanazawa University has a proud tradition of contributing to the development of Japan and the world. The university is located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, where tradition and innovation exist in harmony. Only two and a half hours by a bullet train from Tokyo, the university has become the leading university on the Sea of Japan coast, with more than 10,000 students enrolled in various undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

-Embracing globalization and encouraging brain circulation
Kanazawa University is strongly committed to implementing global standards for education, training and research. With its status as “a research university dedicated to education, while opening its doors to local and global society,” the university realizes the importance of establishing networks and collaboration in these areas, and further its contribution to society by promoting international and interdisciplinary education and research through establishing the Kanazawa University Model for Globalization.

-Strengthening priority research to form world-class research base, and promoting the social implementation of innovative research outcomes
Kanazawa University is cultivating the full spectrum of research — from humanities and social sciences to natural sciences and life sciences, and from fundamental investigations to technology-related studies. In particular, the university sets priority research areas and further promotes interdisciplinary research to form a world-class research base without parallel anywhere else in the world. As one of the outcomes, Kanazawa University established Nano Life Science Institute (NanoLSI) which was selected as a World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) by the Japanese government in 2017. NanoLSI seeks to establish a fundamental understanding of various life phenomena by exploring “uncharted nano realm” of the life sciences.
In addition, the university promotes returning the research outcomes obtained through industry-academia-government collaboration to the society in order to contribute to people’s daily lives and the industry by developing innovative technologies.
