Lingnan University Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies holds ceremony for “Life Story and Epitaph” project and Epitaph Exhibition

The Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS) at Lingnan University celebrated its "Life Story and Epitaph" project with an opening ceremony for the Epitaph Exhibition on 10 October 2025. The event brought together nearly 70 participants included older adults from three community centres in Tuen Mun and Kowloon City, Lingnan University students, and members of the public.

Generously sponsored by the Board of Management of the Chinese Permanent Cemeteries (BMCPC), the project was designed to bridge generational gaps through a series of workshops designing epitaphs, which provided a most unusual platform for young and older adults to explore profound questions together about life’s meaning, and the values worth preserving for future generations.

Prof Dickson Chan Chak-Kwan, Research Professor and Director of APIAS, gave the welcome address, expressing deep gratitude to all partner organisations for their help in strengthening community bonds and encouraging positive life values. Prof Chan then presented commemorative pennants to key partners Ms Wong Tsz-ching (BMCPC), Dr Sharon Chan (Hong Kong Metropolitan University), Mr Patrick Mok Kwan-kit (Lingnan University Office of Service-Learning), and representatives from the elderly centres.

Dr Sharon Chan spoke about supporting the workshops, and highlighted the transformative power of intergenerational dialogue, but the emotional core of the event came from two participants, who delivered heartfelt personal testimonies on how the experience has increased their gratitude for life.

To end the ceremony, Prof Chan presented 25 participants with Epitaph Creation Certificates in recognition of their contributions, and then there was a guided tour of this powerful cross-generational exhibition.
