Dr Mariyappan Shanmugam

Dr. Mariyappan Shanmugam is a Professor of Physics at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai, India. He carries out research in the areas of Materials for Energy related applications. He completed his PhD at South Dakota State University, USA in 2011. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, State University of New York and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA during 2011-2015. He established a research and development division in a Silicon Valley-based start-up company, Macromolecular Inc., to develop photovoltaic materials and devices for space PV applications. Semiconductor Nanomaterials, Thin films, 2D-Layered Materials, Graphene, h-BN for Optoelectronics are his primary research interests.

[  Faculty member with 20 years of interdisciplinary research experience in Physics and materials science with an intense focus on semiconductor nanomaterials for optoelectronics.

[  Four years postdoctoral research experience in the field of emerging nanomaterials and their applications in nano-optoelectronics and energy conversion technologies.

[  Established a research division in a Silicon Valley based start-up industry to develop carbon based functional materials.

  • In class 100 clean room techniques.

[  Filed 4 patents, published 48 journal papers, 20 conference proceedings, three book chapters and edited a book with more than 1900 citations in the field of semiconductor nanomaterials for optoelectronics.

[  Delivered more than 50 presentations at national/international conferences.

[  Serving as an invited reviewer for more than 10 reputed international journals focusing on semiconductor science and nanotechnology.

[  Writing and reviewing research proposals in the area of emerging energy harvesting methodologies for national-international level funding authorities.
