The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is a non-profit international research center with staff from 45 countries. We have an opening for a Faba Bean Breeder, to be based at the headquarters in Aleppo, Syria.
The Position:
ICARDA holds the world collection of faba bean germplasm and has a vigorous pre-breeding program exploiting this variability. The breeding program is based at ICARDA headquarters in Aleppo, Syria, with close links to national programs. ICARDA is seeking a Faba bean breeder to manage its breeding program.
Responsibilities:
• Responsibility for faba bean breeding at ICARDA
• Links in faba bean breeding with national partners and advanced institutes
• Cooperation with scientists in other disciplines such as pathology, biotechnology, agronomy and socio-economics in faba bean research
• Assistance in setting the institute’s priorities in faba bean research.
• Providing training in faba bean breeding
• Development of research proposals for potential donors and of technical reports and training material
• Representing ICARDA in regional and international fora
The position is within the Integrated Gene Management Program, reports to the Program Director, and is based at ICARDA’s modern headquarters and main research station located in a rural setting 35 km from Aleppo, Syria.
Qualifications and Experience:
The successful candidate should have a PhD in plant breeding with a minimum of 5 years experience on research and training, preferably on faba bean and preferably with some work experience in developing countries. Experience in aspects of biotechnology is desirable.
The candidate should be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary and multicultural environment and to establish good working relationships with scientists in national programs. Fluency and good communication skills in written and spoken English are essential, knowledge of Arabic and/or French would be an advantage. The position requires considerable international travel.
