The Akira Suzuki Award and the ICReDD Award, both sponsored by the Tosoh Corporation, were established in 2021 by the Akira Suzuki Award Organizing Committee, led by professors at the Institute for Chemical Reaction Design and Discovery (ICReDD), in commemoration of Professor Akira Suzuki’s winning of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and in celebration of his 90th birthday.

At the Honorary Doctorate Conferment Ceremony today (9 December), Lingnan University (LU) in Hong Kong conferred honorary doctoral degrees upon four distinguished individuals in recognition of outstanding achievements in their respective professions and valuable contributions to the well-being of society. They were Mr Norman Chan Tak-lam(陳德霖), a prominent financial leader who received a Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa; Ms Sylvia Chang Ai-chia (張艾嘉), an esteemed film director who received a Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa; Prof Deane E. Neubauer, a prolific political science scholar who received a Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa (in absentia); and Prof Zhong Nanshan(鍾南山), a world-renowned respiratory disease expert who received a Doctor of Science, honoris causa (in absentia).

Researchers at the Department of Microbiology at The University of Hong Kong have succeeded in the isolation of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant from clinical specimens. This is the first known research team in Asia that has succeeded in isolating the Omicron variant. The isolated variant will enable the development and production of vaccines against Omicron, which has been designated as a "variant of concern" by the World Health Organization.

A new agreement between Japan’s Research Organization for Information Science and Technology (RIST) and National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore opens the path for Singapore researchers to regularly access and request for supercomputing resources from the world’s most powerful supercomputer, Japan’s Fugaku system. In the first such arrangement of its kind outside of Japan, Singapore researchers can now apply for available resources through an annual Call for Projects to Fugaku, which will be coordinated by NSCC and RIST.

Dell Technologies Malaysia (Dell) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in a milestone industry-academia move to produce more industry-ready graduates. The MoU provides a platform for Dell and USM to work hand-in-hand to groom and equip USM undergraduates to be highly employable graduates under the USM LIFE Programme, a new academic initiative that advocates creative and experiential learning.
