“Cultivating future female scientists”: DGIST and three Daegu high schools join forces to foster future talent in advanced science

- MOU signed with Daegu Girls’ High School, Gyungbuk Girls’ High School, and Suseong High School for collaboration on student research (R/E) - Practical career exploration programs to be operated, including research mentoring and open-lab visits

□ DGIST (President Kunwoo Lee) Convergence Gifted Academy (Director Chang-won Seok) announced on October 6 that it had signed separate “Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) on Student Research and Education (R/E) Cooperation” with Daegu Girls’ High School (Principal Chan-hee Lee), Gyungbuk Girls’ High School (Principal Woong-yeol Moon), and Suseong High School (Principal Myeon-sook Choi).

□ The agreements were established to build a framework for educational and research collaboration between DGIST and local high schools and to support students in acquiring firsthand experience of actual science and technology research settings and exploring specific career paths. Through these efforts, DGIST and the schools intend to identify talented students in the region and systematically nurture future female talent in science.

□ Under the agreements, DGIST and each school will cooperate in student research and education by (1) conducting joint research projects to nurture female talent in science; (2) providing research mentoring in science and engineering in connection with DGIST faculty and researchers; (3) offering educational programs and special lectures on advanced science and technology and providing instructors; (4) organizing Open Lab visits utilizing DGIST’s research infrastructure; and (5) operating experiential programs for exploring academic and career pathways in science and technology.

□ “Through this agreement, we intend to enable local students acquire direct experience of DGIST’s research settings and develop the capability to design more concrete career plans in science and technology,” said Chang-won Seok, Director of the DGIST Convergence Gifted Academy. “We will actively leverage DGIST’s educational and research capabilities, including research mentoring, joint projects, and Open Lab programs, to support the growth of future female talent in science.”

□ “DGIST’s outstanding research infrastructure and mentoring by its faculty will provide students with a valuable opportunity to experience actual research beyond the classroom,” said Chan-hee Lee, Principal of Daegu Girls’ High School. “We will work closely together to foster students’ interest in science and technology and cultivate their inquiry skills.”

□ “We expect students to develop their problem-solving skills and research capabilities by participating in actual research projects and various science and technology programs,” said Woong-yeol Moon, Principal of Gyungbuk Girls’ High School. Myeon-sook Choi, Principal of Suseong High School, added, “We hope that special lectures on advanced science and experiential programs for exploring academic and career pathways will afford students an opportunity to broaden their understanding of science and technology and take the initiative in designing their own career paths.”

□ Meanwhile, DGIST continues to expand science education and academic and career exploration programs in collaboration with the local community, while fostering future talent in science, technology, and AI. Going forward, DGIST intends to reinforce its collaboration with local educational institutions and leverage its educational and research infrastructure, thereby expanding its role as a regional hub for nurturing talent in science and technology.
