News: Foreign students face extra UK security checks

Foreign students wishing to come to the UK for graduate studies in science and engineering must now undergo security checks before they can apply for their study visas. The new programme quietly introduced by the British government last week affects people from all countries outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland.

The screenings are designed to prevent the spread of “sensitive” knowledge to foreign nationals, according to a spokesman for the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Sensitive fields such as nuclear physics and microbiology could easily be turned to malicious purposes, he says. In this week’s issue, Nature takes a look.

A copy of the full news report is on the 8 November issue page of the Nature press site.
