His Excellency, Mr Mikheil Saakashvili, the President of Georgia will deliver a lecture entitled “New Developments in the Caspian and South Caucasus: A View from Georgia”, at RUSI on 25 April 2007.
Following the Rose Revolution, Mr Mikheil Saakashvili became the democratically elected President of Georgia on 25 January 2004. His Government has since engaged in an ambitious programme of reform, including economic modernisation, the restoration of law and order and renewed respect for human rights.
Under President Saakashvili, Georgia has drawn closer to Euro-Atlantic structures and was included in the EU’s European Neighbourhood Policy in June 2004. Georgia has contributed troops to Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq, and continues to move towards NATO membership.
However, challenges remain. There have been disputes with Russia, and problems persist over South Ossetia and Abkhazia over the country’s future international integration. Nevertheless, Georgia has come a great distance in a short time and this lecture will provide an opportunity to consider the country’s considerable achievements and hear about its future priorities.
This lecture is part of the European Security Dialogue Framework and is open to all RUSI Members. The President’s address will begin promptly at 1230 and will be followed by a Question-and-Answer session.
A sandwich lunch is served from 1200. Non RUSI members are welcome to attend but there is a fee of £6 for lunch.
