DGIST Partners with Sambo Motors to Advance AX Innovation in the Robotics Industry, Establishes “Joint Research Lab” to Support Technological Self-Reliance

□ DGIST (President Kunwoo Lee) announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sambo Motors on May 14 (Thu) to promote artificial intelligence transformation (AX; AI Transformation) in the robotics industry.

□ The agreement is intended to support Sambo Motors, a leading regional automotive parts specialist, in internalizing design technologies for key robotics components based on its established manufacturing expertise and in transitioning its business structure toward becoming a specialist in advanced robotics components. Since its establishment in 1977, Sambo Motors has supplied key powertrain and chassis components to domestic and global automakers and has recently expanded its business into eco-friendly vehicles and future mobility.

□ To generate tangible outcomes from the agreement, the two institutions will establish the “DGIST-Sambo Motors AX Joint Research Lab” within DGIST. The lab will operate under an “industry-academia-research one-team” framework, in which corporate research personnel and DGIST researchers will work together in a shared space to conduct collaborative research. Through this initiative, the two parties plan to develop manufacturing innovation technologies that combine artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics and jointly pursue the entire process from the design to the validation of key robotics components.

□ In particular, this collaboration focuses on combining the university’s advanced research capabilities with the company’s on-site data to address technical challenges in actual manufacturing environments. Using the joint research lab as a base, the two institutions plan to secure advanced robotics component technologies, support Sambo Motors’ business diversification, and expand the ecosystem of the regional robotics industry.

□ DGIST President Kunwoo Lee said, “By combining Sambo Motors’ extensive on-site experience and data accumulated over many years with DGIST’s unparalleled research capabilities in AI and robotics, we will drive innovation in manufacturing.” He added, “We expect this collaboration to become an important milestone in accelerating the AX transformation of regional industries and strengthening competitiveness in future emerging industries.”

□ Meanwhile, DGIST plans to continue expanding close cooperation with regional mid-sized companies and SMEs, while accelerating technology support and talent development to help the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region emerge as a key hub for the global robotics industry.
