Globalised World"
Organised by : Department of Foreign Languages
Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication Universiti Putra Malaysia
The globalisation process in the new millennium has emphasized the importance of learning and using foreign languages. Being bilingual or multilingual is no longer the priviledge of a selected few but concerns a wider spectrum of modern societies where ideology, politics and economy are no more an impediment to the study of languages. The emergence of regional poles has enhanced the visibility of certain long-neglected languages and this has also benefited other idioms.
Bilateral and multilateral collaboration is now widespread in the exploration of available resources. Increasing number of individuals and groups from across borders enter into contact with each other and the necessity of knowing the language and culture of the other has been shown to be crucial.
Malaysia, in seeking to be a developed nation by 2020, has been diligently and conscientiously encouraging its people to participate in diverse fields and sectors of world class standing. To succeed in the international arena, Malaysia needs to produce a society which commands more than two languages. The mastery of foreign languages other than English will enable the nation to explore further and widen its participation and presence in the international market more effectively. This is also in line with Malaysia's policy of accepting all nations in this world as working partners. Hence the aim of learning foreign languages has to be given a new dimension and paradigm so as to be in line with the aspirations and ambitions of the nation to be a developed nation.
It is hoped that this conference will serve as a catalyst, in leading the way towards realizing the definition and aim of foreign languages as an indispensable tool in moulding our society towards excellence and distinction, through the presentation of papers, discussions and constructive feedback from participants.
