“We plan and solve with AI”: DGIST successfully holds student-led AI Build Week

- Synergy between student-led planning and technical and personnel support from promising AI companies, including Upstage, Lablup, and UNIVA - “Learning about AI that may feel overwhelming by tackling it together”: One-stop program featuring lectures on the latest AI trends, mentoring, and a campus problem-solving hackathon

□ DGIST (President Kunwoo Lee) announced that it successfully held the “2026 DGIST AI Build Week,” a student-led AI education event, on campus over two days from July 23 to 24 with approximately 200 members of the DGIST community participating, including students, faculty, and staff.

 

□ The event was organized to allow DGIST members interested in AI to learn together regardless of their major, affiliation, or level of technical expertise and to turn the skills they acquired into tangible outcomes. In particular, it was operated as a collaborative educational model in which the student operations group led the entire process, from program planning to on-site operations, while DGIST and AI companies provided educational infrastructure and technical and human resources.

 

□ DGIST provided the operational infrastructure for the event, including educational spaces and GPU-based computing infrastructure. Upstage, a Korean generative AI company; Lablup, an AI infrastructure operating platform company; and UNIVA, a company specializing in AI agents founded by DGIST alumni, participated as sponsors and provided the latest technologies and expert personnel.

 

□ The educational program was structured in stages to enable participation by everyone from AI beginners to those with development experience. Participants could choose sessions according to their skill level and interests, ranging from the use of basic AI technologies to AI agent development for complex tasks, on-device AI implementation, and AI model training using data.

 

□ The main programs included 1) lectures by industry and academic experts, 2) AI application workshops tailored to different skill levels, and 3) team-based AI hackathons. The experts shared the latest trends in AI technology and their experiences in real-world industry and development settings, and provided mentoring to support participants in carrying out their projects.

 

□ The event concluded with a hackathon in which participants formed teams and used AI technologies to solve various problems identified on campus. They carried out the entire project process, from identifying problems and concretizing ideas to service planning, technical implementation, prototype development, and final presentations, thereby building AI-based problem-solving capabilities and gaining experience in collaboration.

 

□ “I wanted to create an opportunity for DGIST members who are interested in AI but unsure of how to get started to learn together and create tangible outcomes,” said Jaeyoung Choi (Class of 2022, School of Undergraduate Studies), who planned the event. “It is especially meaningful to see students’ ideas develop into real learning experiences and collaboration through the support of the university and industry.”

 

□ “This event was particularly meaningful in that students went beyond being recipients of education and directly planned and operated the program,” said Minseok Jeon, Director of the DGIST Center for Teaching and Learning. “We will actively provide support so that students’ ideas can develop into new educational programs.”

 

□ “AI capabilities are most effectively developed through the process of solving real-world problems,” said Jinhyun So, Director of the DGIST Supercomputing AI Education and Research Center. “We will expand related programs so that students can experience the latest technologies in collaboration with companies and strengthen their practical skills.”

 

□ Taking this event as an opportunity, DGIST plans to further strengthen the AI capabilities of its campus community while continuously expanding a participatory model of education and industry-academia collaboration in which students take the lead and the university and industry provide support.
