Charles Lee, global authority on genomic structural variation, presents the future of the human genome at DGIST

- DGIST successfully hosts the 30th Distinguished Lecture Series featuring Prof. Charles Lee, world-renowned authority in genomic medicine - Shares cutting-edge research findings on human genomic structural variation and precision medicine and introduces the latest technological trends such as long-read sequencing

□ DGIST (President Kunwoo Lee) announced that it successfully held the 30th DGIST Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) on Tuesday the 28th at Consilience Hall L29, featuring Prof. Charles Lee, a world-renowned authority in genomic medicine.

□ Currently, Charles Lee is a distinguished professor at The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in the United States and a global authority in genomic structural variation research, having served as a professor at Harvard Medical School and Scientific Director at The Jackson Laboratory.

□ The lecture was delivered under the theme “Structural Variants in Complex Regions of the Human Genome.” Charles Lee explored in depth the mechanisms underlying structural variation in complex regions of the human genome characterized by dense repetitive sequences, and how these are associated with genetic diseases and cancer.

□ He drew considerable attention by presenting, in an accessible manner, recent research advances using long-read sequencing, an advanced genomic analysis technique that reads long stretches of DNA, along with various platforms. This lecture, which offered direct insight into frontline research in genomics, attracted keen interest from DGIST members, as well as scholars in related fields.

□ “The lecture by Charles Lee, a world-renowned authority on structural variation in the human genome, was a highly inspiring occasion for DGIST students and researchers,” stated DGIST President Kunwoo Lee. “It also provided a meaningful opportunity to directly engage with the latest developments in genomics and precision medicine. DGIST will continue to lead interdisciplinary research and innovative education through sustained engagement with leading global scholars.”

□ DGIST’s Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) is a regular lecture program designed to invite leading scholars from various fields in Korea and abroad, enabling members and regional scholars to share global research trends and build academic networks. DGIST aims to further invigorate academic exchange in genomics and precision medicine following this lecture, while strengthening the development of next-generation interdisciplinary talent and enhancing its research competitiveness in basic science.
