DGIST drives AI transformation (AX) through in-house technological innovation: Full-scale launch of an advanced AI campus

- Establishing the foundation for in-house capabilities such as student and administrative AI chatbots, knowledge management platform “ChunkLab,” and knowledge-sharing platform “AI-HUB” - Expanding the areas of AI application across the university, including plans for the pilot deployment of local LLMs and AI agents in the second half of the year

□ DGIST (President Kunwoo Lee) is gradually building campus-wide generative AI services and a knowledge infrastructure based on its internal technological capabilities, without relying on large-scale external outsourcing, thereby laying the groundwork for accumulating and expanding AI transformation (AX) capabilities across the university.

 

□ In the first half of this year, the DGIST Information Computing Team has focused on progressively planning and developing generative AI services that students, faculty, and staff can use for campus life and administrative work, while accumulating relevant technology and operational experience within the university. The goal is to internalize university-level AX capabilities by creating an environment in which members of the DGIST community can directly use AI and share and manage knowledge, beyond simply adopting individual services.

 

□ As the first step, the “AI Chatbot for Students,” launched in April, was designed to allow students to access information on academic systems and campus life through conversational interactions, improving access to information and ease of use. Then, in July, DGIST established an “AI Chatbot for Administrative Work” to support faculty and staff in their work, along with “ChunkLab,” a knowledge management system that enables staff in each department to directly register and manage the knowledge resources used to generate AI responses. ChunkLab will be expanded to gather and manage key university knowledge data in one place and enable various AI services to utilize it.

 

□ The campus-wide AI knowledge-sharing platform “AI-HUB,” which began operation alongside these services, enables members to share the latest AI news, ready-to-use prompts (commands), AI apps, and guides for using AI at work. It also shares use cases and practical application methods for new AI extension technologies, such as a Model Context Protocol (MCP) for searching Korean laws and regulations and an MCP for creating Hangul (.hwpx) documents, helping members more easily understand evolving AI technologies and apply them to their work.

 

□ This foundation is also being used to expand opportunities for members to gain hands-on experience with AI. At the “2026 DGIST AI Build Week (Hackathon)” held in July, participating students were provided with an environment in which they could use the “AI-HUB” platform to plan, develop, and gain hands-on experience with AI apps, which contributed to enhancing their understanding of AI technologies and their ability to use them.

 

□ This development is significant in that DGIST directly planned and operated services in-house, thereby building its understanding of generative AI technologies and accumulating operational experience, rather than relying solely on the adoption of external solutions. In the second half of the year, DGIST plans to develop a “local LLM (an in-house large language model with enhanced security)” considering security and usability based on this foundation, while also pursuing the pilot deployment of an “AI agent (intelligent assistant)” that provides conversational support for internal administrative tasks such as leave and business trip applications.

 

□ “This initiative is particularly meaningful because they accumulated AI technology and operational experience within the university and laid the groundwork for members to use them together, beyond simply adopting a few AI services,” said DGIST President Kunwoo Lee. “We will continue to apply AI technologies in stages to meet the university’s specific characteristics and needs, expanding an environment for AI use that students, faculty, and staff can experience firsthand in their work and university life.”
